Healthy Schools Wales

At Darran Park Primary school we see the promotion of Health and Well-being as central to school life.    We have achieved phase 5 of the scheme and are currently working towards achieving phase 6.
Mrs Davies is the Healthy Schools Co-ordinator and is supported by our Healthy Helper and Playground Leader pupil voice groups.

Within the scheme, there are seven health topics that schools need to address. These include:
  • Hygiene
  • Safety
  • Environment
  • Substance Use and Misuse
  • Personal Development and Relationships
  • Mental and emotional Health and Well-being
  • Food and Fitness

 To achieve Phase 6
We are working on the topics of:

Personal Development and Relationships
RSHE – Relationship, Sex and Health Education:
A curriculum through which children explore the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up. They learn about positive relationships, growth and changes, as well as physical and mental health.
The Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSE) curriculum became statutory in September 2020. Relationships and Sex Education supports and guides children and young people in lifelong learning about relationships, emotions, the human biology of sex and sexuality. It is compulsory for all primary school children to receive relationship education.

Our RSE curriculum links in with our science curriculum and Years 1 to 5 will have a total of 3 lessons delivered over the course of the year while year 6 will have 4 lessons. Details of the lessons can be found on the curriculum map.

Substance Use and Misuse
At Darran Park we follow the Christopher Winter’s Project for the teaching of Substance use and mis-use.
This is a scheme of work that includes lesson plans and teaching materials for Year 1 to Year 6. It builds on learning from previous years and revisits topics each year to cover them in greater depth.
The Christopher Winter’s Project resources and lessons plans are quality-assured by the PSHE Association and the DFE to best support children along their learning journey of RSE  (Relationships, Sex and Health Education.)

Food and Fitness
At Darran Park we aspire for our pupils to become healthy and confident individuals. We encourage pupils to participate in our after school activities as well as the variety of sporting activities offered in school throughout the year.
We would appreciate it if you would support us by providing your child with a break time snack of fruit of vegetables only.
